BIO

Dr. Danielle Carroll joined Aspen Valley Hospital’s surgical team in 2024. Dr. Carroll holds multiple certifications within the surgical field, including robotic surgery, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, trauma evaluation and Advanced Trauma Operative Management. She is also a certified instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support. In 2020, Dr. Carroll earned her qualification as a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM). She is a founding member of the Space Surgery Association, dedicated to developing robotic surgical capabilities in the austere environment of space. As a surgeon, her professional passions include trauma surgery and the forward-leaning technology associated with robotic surgery; she completed a fellowship as a surgical consultant and device innovator with Baylor College of Medicine’s Translational Research Institute for Space Health and the University of California San Francisco. In addition, Dr. Carroll maintains a breast surgery practice here at AVH, offering local access to care for patients with breast cancer and other pathology.

Dr. Carroll completed her undergraduate studies as an Echols Scholar at the University of Virginia. Following graduation, she spent several years as an active-duty officer with the U.S. Air Force, later transitioning to the Reserve to attend medical school at the University of Virginia. Dr. Carroll makes ongoing contributions as a global surgeon, providing surgical care in extreme, resource-constrained rural settings, including robotic, laparoscopic, and breast surgery programs in North and East Africa, as well as in Central and South America. She actively contributes her expertise as visiting faculty at the University of Global Health Equity and with Global Surgical Expedition, educating surgeons in Rwanda and Belize most recently on minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Carroll completed her residency at the University of California San Diego and Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she served concurrently with her Air National Guard unit. Throughout her training, robotic approaches to a broad array of general surgical procedures were emphasized. During that time frame, she also was the principal investigator on a NASA research grant and earned two master’s degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder, an M.S. in Bioastronautics and an M.E. in Tech Innovation/Management. Dr. Carroll served as a physician and eventually a surgeon with the Air National Guard throughout her surgical training and career; recent roles include serving as a flight surgeon for an F-22 Raptor unit and as an expeditionary general surgeon on a NATO mission to Morocco. She was drawn to Aspen by its community-centric vibe and the big city cultural amenities it offers, as well as the work hard, play hard ethos of Aspenites. She is also impressed by the teamwork among her surgical colleagues at Aspen Valley Hospital, and by the organization’s commitment to providing the highest level of care with the latest technologies.
